At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
