England along with Wales Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing mirrors their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one the Springboks before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools conclude in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
