Early Saturday, reports emerged of major blasts rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, without initially offer further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major developments leading up to this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
