Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
